The largest group in Plum Cross Country history turned
out Saturday August 24 at Boyce Park to take part in the annual
Intrasquad meet and Family Picnic.
The day began with over 30 junior high runners from
OBlock and St. Johns competing in a 1.3 mile race.
In
the main event, 47 Running Mustangs christened a newly designed 3.1
mile course. All runners finished the race and many had very
fast times. Cam Christeson was the first runner in with a
18.27. "New Kid" Nick Croasdaile surprised some with a
second place finish. Mike Russo. Jon Good and Chris DeRiggi
rounded out the top five.
The top two girls finished in tandem as
Rachel Twigg and Jess Youra paced each other across the finish line at
22.55. They seem to be inseparable. Leanna Stitt,
Val Vandzura, Brooke Taylor, Lisa Dugan and Heather Zielonka all
finished with a minute of each other. Coach I was very pleased
by the efforts of all runners.
After the race, Coach Ionta introduced each
runner and food was served. After a great meal and lots of sweet
desserts, the traditional Three-Legged-Race, Balloon Toss and Egg Toss
took place. Once again, a wonderful time was had by all. PHOTOSEgg
Toss
After winning back to back Egg Toss Championships , the Greens
were eliminated for the competition early when Jon couldn't handle an
easy toss from Dad. Freshman Mark Pronio was the unlike winner
of this years competition.
Three-Legged- Race
Nearly 20 teams lined up for the start of the race. The
tension built as Coach Ionta tied each team shin to shin with purple
pre-wrap. Partners strategized how they would race to the
cones set 100 ft. away and return back to the finish line.
Finally, the whistle blew and they broke for the cones. They
also broke the pre-wrap ties around their legs. Yes, all 20 teams were
disqualified within three strides. No winner was named, but we
all learned a lesson in how not to run a three-legged-race. |
